October Book Basket

A new month means a new book basket!

Each month I assemble a basket full of seasonally appropriate books.  This basket lives in our living room next to our fireplace.  It is a cozy spot so the kids often pick up a book and read comfortably.

I started collecting seasonal books when I was a classroom teacher.  We lived within walking distance of a Barnes and Noble and I just couldn’t resist the beautifully displayed books in the children’s book section.  I think it is fair to say they received quite a bit of my paycheck each week!  Over the years I have added to the collection anytime I find seasonal books at thrift stores and yard sales.

Libraries can be another great place to find seasonal books as they usually have a good variety. They go fast though, so I try to reserve them at least a week before the start of the new month.  We only keep library books for a week or two so that other families can enjoy them too.

I assemble book baskets around common monthly themes, not reading level.  These books are very easy for my children now, but that is okay.  They spend a large portion of their school day reading.  I do not assign these books.  The purpose of our monthly book basket is solely to encourage reading for enjoyment.
